VOIP – Voice Over Internet Protocol
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) allows you to make phone calls over a computer network - usually the Internet - rather than the traditional telephone network.
VoIP offers significant potential savings. If you have an always-on broadband connection to the Internet, then calls between individuals with VoIP equipment - even international calls - are free of cost. All you pay for is your Internet connection. If you currently have a multiple site business with a main branch office and satelitte offices in other towns etc it is now possible to make phone calls between these sites and to any dialable number anywhere in the world using either exisiting DATA lease line services or Broadband. Of course you could use exisitng Leased lines (64k Kilostream up to 2mb Megastream services by BT typically) and run VOIP equipment each end to make internal calls free or make one site dial all it’s calls from the other etc. Bigger savings could be made by setting up a VPN (virtual Private Network) and running VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) and disgard the use of the Leased lines altogether saving vast sums of money. There are, however, a number of drawbacks to be considered:
